Environmental measures

Reducing environmental impact and achieving coexistence
with the environment and local communities

Protection of the environment is recognized as the most important issue for mankind, so companies these days
need to feel a sense of social responsibility for the environment. The entire Sogo Printing organization therefore conducts
a range of business activities that prioritize the environment.

Environmental measures: ISO 14001 certification

One of the environmental measures being implemented by the Sogo Group is acquisition of the ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management. Our Hyogo Plant acquired ISO 14001 certification in May 2002, and our Kanto Plant acquired the same in October 2007. We also conduct a range of environmental conservation activities based on this Environmental Management System. As a rule, we use materials with low environmental impact, such as recovered or recycled paper for printing, and water-based coatings that do not generate hazardous substances for surface treatments. For our inks as well, we use vegetable oils that are easily biodegradable and are friendly to the environment to meet the needs of our customers. When developing products, we also focus on being able to deliver products that do not waste our natural resources, including paper blister packs that do not need to be separated from plastics for disposal like at present, and labels that are easily removable when the containers are returned for recycling.

At our Hyogo Plant, we are working to reduce energy usage and waste generated in order to reduce environmental impact, which has enabled us to considerably reduce waste paper and electricity consumption. Our Environment Management Committee holds a meeting every month, which along with improving internal communications, cultivates opportunities for environmental activities, raises our employees’ awareness of environmental conservation, collects information about the plant environment, and promotes disclosure to employees.
At our Kanto Plant, we established an Environmental Policy when acquiring ISO 14001 certification, and along with the use of posters, we are working hard to raise awareness of the policy among our employees. We are conducting a number of environmental activities there as well, including cleanup activities around the plant and community-based greening activities, while process managers regularly report to our Environment Council on progress and future directions related to their environmental activities.

Meibundo Industries Co., Ltd., one of our group companies, acquired KES Environmental Management System certification in January 2007, a Japan-based standard designed to be easier to understand and implement than ISO 14001. To maintain the KES standard, the committee meets once every two months to report, revise and improve initiatives, and to conduct training aimed at raising consciousness and awareness of environmental issues among all employees.

Use of low environmental impact materials

  • As a rule, we use printing paper such as recovered or recycled paper as our way of helping protect
our forest resources in a recycling-oriented manner.
  • For surface treatments, we use water-based and other coatings that do not generate hazardous substances
such as volatile organic solvents (VOCs).
